Sahiwal Coal Power Project
The then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif laid the foundation stone for Sahiwal Coal Power Project in Sahiwal in 2014.
Work started on the collaborative project between the Punjab government and Chinese companies to set up two coal-based power plants of 660 megawatts each in Sahiwal will began within a month.
The coal project to generate 1,320MW of electricity and to be completed in 30 months with China’s assistance.
It was estimated that 21000 MW would be added by 2024.
In 2014, Government was producing 13,000MW of electricity when the country had the capacity to produce 23,000MW.
It is worth mentioning that Pakistan only produces approximately 10% electricity from hydal power plants in Pakistan (through water) while Pakistan can produce a lot more (90% resources are not being used). It is the cheapest means of producing electricity. It is blamed that the thermal and coal power plants have more commissions for the corrupt mafia.
